Summary of “How to Use Meta Tags”

Meta tags may sound technical, but they are a really useful way to help search engines know what your site is about and get your site to rank well for certain keywords.  Even if you don’t already have meta tags automatically created for your website, you should consider customizing them.

First, watch this informative video by Kurt Steinbrueck, Director of Marketing Services at OurChurch.com.  He will walk you through how to use meta tags on any web page and particularly how to add meta tags in the NE1 web builder and, in just a few minutes, you can make some changes that will help improve your site’s ranking.

What are Meta Tags?

Meta tags are the code in a website that search engines can read to learn what your site is about.  There are several types of Meta tags.

  • Meta Title

The meta title sends the strongest signal to the search engine about what your site is about, so you want to make sure your keywords are in your Meta title. Remember, this doesn’t have to be the title of your organization.  It can be if your keywords are also part of your organization’s title.  But if not, you can be creative and find ways to use your keywords here. You do want to limit your title to about 60-70 characters.

  • Meta Keywords

Meta keywords aren’t as important as they used to be, but it doesn’t hurt to add them in.  You can list about 5-7 keywords.

  • Meta Description

The Meta description is where you want to give a very exciting description about your site or organization so that people will be intrigued and want to click through to your site.  Be creative! It’s a good idea to give them a direct action to take such as “Click through to learn more about our church!”

You want to be sure you do this for each page that you have for your site, because each page is unique and important. The more keywords you can tag, the better you will rank with search engines.
